I wouldn't have thought so either, I've just been hearing a lot more "when" rather than "if" he gets fired. I haven't been following the details of this mess that much, but from the outside looking in and catching up on twitter, things don't seem to be going the way he hoped.

If Payton was suspended for continuing and covering up a pay to injure program, then what happens if it turns out that such a program didn't exist?

If this is all they have then Goodell has to end this soon. He can't think he can run this scam on bluster much longer. People are starting to realize that the emperor has no clothes. It's one thing for Goodell to take some PR hits to achieve the owners goals by acting like a tyrant, it's another thing for him to take himself down with a self manufactured scandal.

If the purpose of all this was to help the league in its suits by former players, then it's failed. The WhoDat Nation, Jon Vilma, other players, Ginsberg, along with a growing number of media members (who initially had to be dragged along kicking and screaming) have blown the lid off this thing.

Any PR value the suspensions would have had for the league are gone because of Goodell's incompetence and overplaying his hand. If the league tries to bring this into a court as evidence they are all for player safety, any halfway decent player's attorney will blow it up and show it for the cynical PR attempt that it is. Stuff likes this just makes juries mad because they don't like being treated like someone thinks they're fools.

I hope he get fired and sued. Unless he has more than this I can see this going to court for defamation and lost wages and crap and Goodell having his name dragged through the mud. Fingers crossed.
