there's one fly in the ointment here-

Just imagine a team with defensive personnel comparable to the Saints in the 80s, and an offense comparable to the Saints now....

and you get the Jim Kelly Bills. Yeah, 4 straight Super Bowls (although 4 straight losses too).

People forget Buffalo had a defense as imposing as the Saints and Giants back then; at first at least. But when they went to the K-Gun offense, they got stuck on the field so long they wore out and broke down. Remember, the Saints ate clock on offense like nobody's business, we'd have 10 play drives for 50 yd field goals.
Crank up the offense and the Dome Patrol would break down eventually too.

I understand your thread. Problem would be getting all of those star players on defense with the type of money Brees would demand. Salary cap can only hold so much talent. But yeah, having a decent group of players on defense and the Saints could have challenged the 49'ers run of dominancy.

I think these days, you want a balance of offense and defense. Prob. better to have a decent defense over offense.

The only part of that defense that was good was the linebackers & defensive line. The defensive backfield was awful.

The 49'ers & Cowboys found a way to win year after year under the same salary cap as the Saints.
