Here's my question...

If the Saints rise above this and use this as the BIGGEST MOTIVATION in the history of the league to WIN the Super Bowl, albeit without Payton... does the fans' allegiance to Payton suffer? Or vice versa?
In all honesty, I truly do believe that the Saints as a team will come out and dominate this year, no matter what players get suspended. Drew Brees will lead this team like he never has before, he will be unstoppable. I know this sounds like major homerism... but seriously... we have made the playoffs 3 years straight and I don't see us stopping here. Pete Carmichael has already proven that he can call plays for this team and be successful. What's going to stop him from dominating again?
So my question again is this, if we go on and are VERY SUCCESSFUL this year... whether we win the Super Bowl or even just make it to the Super Bowl... does Payton lose interest in coming back and want to start a rebuilding process at another team? Or does the organization lose interest in Payton and hire Pete Carmichael to run this team?
This is a tough question to ask, and may sound absurd, but for sake of conversation.. what say you?
Bottom line is... with this team, this quarterback, this city... I don't see us losing more than 6 games... we will make the Playoffs and run the table once we do.
to the league.

not that I like that but motivation can only go so far and I just don't see the Saints getting one break this year....not one

In all honesty, I think a lot of y'all are gonna be in for a rude awakening with Payton gone. And you don't even know what players might be suspended and for how long. This just turned into a 8-8 team.

Been there before. We know how to handle it. We'll take a season to knock all the bandwagoners off the bandwagon. Playoffs or not, Payton or not, I'm lookin forward to this season. Then Sean Payton comes back next year and we win the fricking superbowl. Bring it NFL. We've been down before, but we'll come back.

Same here. If ever there was a "us against the world" motivation needed this is it.

I'm sure. And the good news for y'all "in my opinion" is that I don't see the Falcons winning more than 9 games this year, so a couple balls bouncing your way and the Saints could still sneak into the playoffs. Panthers are still a couple years and pieces away.

I think home field advantage may be a stretch, but playoffs are still a very real possibility. The key for me is Drew Brees. If he can sign long term and be happy, I think he can bring this team together.
Our offensive line contains 3 pro bowlers from last year. We have a good stable of RBs. We still have Colston and Graham. The defense wasn't necessarily our strong point last year anyway.
Our division is not necessarily the strongest in the league. I don't see Tampa, Atlanta, or Carolina running away with this division this year.
The loss of Payton will sting, no doubt, but PC and Spags are both capable in their respective areas.

I love your response.. level headed and real. Like another poster said, I couldn't be more excited for this year. I'd rather be the villain team than the one no one cares about.

Am I the only one that thinks the Saints win 10+ games this season? AND I HATE THE SAINTS!
You guys just NEED to sign Brees and shite will calm down. Once Brees gets his deal - I think some calm will come to the fanbase.

Nope. I'm right there with you. Its these little maggots coming out the woodwork the last couple days that dont. We got Brees, we got a chance.

I wouldn't be surprised at all with a 10 or 11 win season.

I mean honestly, just look at the division.
A) The Falcons have not done anything to improve as of FA. Saints have their # and at worst you go 1-1 against them.
B) TB has made a ton of moves but signing a lot of guys that just made bank usually doesn't work. Oh, and Josh Freeman. Saints go 2-0 against them.
C) Carolina - somewhat of a wild card. Smith has got to slow down from last season and I think people solve the riddle of sCam. 2-0 against them.
I can easily see the Saints as 5-1 in the division. That will give you ~9-11 wins on the season and that's pretty damn good.

Seriously. Y'all are still a damn good team. If ALL Saints fans were like the better posters of this board - I might (shutters) be a Saints fan as well. I just can't stand the negative nancy's.

One less Falcon fan in the world is always a good thing.

If there are a ton of player suspensions maybe the 2012 Saints should just lay down, play a bunch of scrubs and go for 0-16 to ensure the first pick in the draft next year. Maybe missing the 2nd round next year won't hurt so much with the first pick in the draft.
