There's a difference between not wanting to take someone (ie Butler) at 12 because you believe there are better prospects on the board, and because you just think "12 is too high."
What is the difference?

The latter is more of a fan mind set based upon what they see in mock drafts from members of the media.

"Too high" is always is reference to the other players available. If I say #12 is too high for Butler, and I did say that earlier in this thread, it only has meaning in reference to who else is available at #12. And given that DT is the deepest position in this year's draft, the likelihood is that a DT taken at #47 will be very close to Butler in ability and potential. All of which is to say #12 is too high for Butler IMO.

No disagreement there. I should have clarified my original statement better, but my point was more of a team vs fan standpoint. 99% of fans base their player value off of mock drafts by the Kiper's, and Matt Miller's of the media scouting world, but there's always the chance the Butler is the top player on the Saints' board at 12. Not to mention, different players fit different schemes. I don't think he will be, but it wouldn't be the first time they've surprised me, especially in the 1st.

Certainly the majority of mock drafts out there are going to be proven wrong. However, they tend to at least identify an estimated range for a player (as many are the accumulation of information gained from the teams). However, every now and then a surprise comes about (Heyward-Bey to OAK, Irvin to SEA for instance).

Heck, maybe some team will fall in love with Butler in the 1st round earlier than expected. There are worse prospects that he, but I just think the depth of DTs makes it easier for him to go late 1st or into the low-mid 2nd. He is somewhat raw but has the physical skills to be dominant if he develops.

Listen, I like Butler a lot. They could do worse in round 1, but I hope they don't take him there simply because I think they can fulfill the DT need in round 2. But as you say, it's going to come down to who is the top player left on their board when they pick. There are about 10 players who seem to be consensus top picks. After that it's gonna be which team falls in love with which player.

Well look at this, Walterfootball just updated it's draft. Watch Vernon Butler get more and more hype as the draft approaches.

I saw that mock earlier today. It's outside the box, that's for sure. He has Shaq Lawson falling to the Saints at #47.

Where did you see this? Last year, there were many players picked on the 2nd day that were invited. They significantly expanded the number of players invited last year (not sure how many invited this year).

Once Tuesday is over, Butler will embark on a month-long tour of various NFL teams. He said he has around 15 visits scheduled with teams like Jacksonville, Detroit and Kansas City. To cap it off, Butler will be in Chicago for the NFL Draft after receiving an official invite last weekend. "I've been wanting to do that forever and they called me last Sunday. It was crazy," said Butler, who previously crossed off Senior Bowl and combine invites off his wish list.

I saw that he fell. Been reading for a while now that teams are not that hot on him. I could easily see him falling to the 2nd round with the injury now.

As the draft gets closer, Butler is moving on up the boards. Still would take him at 12. Doubt he lasts in a far trade down scenario now.

Tell Vernon Butler to watch out for Joe Horn.

Vernon Butler will be a top 15 pick. His hype is blowing up and numerous scouts have been saying he'll be going at the top half of the first round. Oakland makes a lot of sense in my opinion. I want Rankins most right now (from a realistic stand point) but if we took Butler, I wouldn't be upset.
