Let's get the cap down from $17mil over first.

Won't we get there from Vilma and Smith stepping down anyway? At least close. Not sure what Moore's specific cap save would be, but I think it was another 4-5 mil

Vilma's contract is done, $0 diff

Smith cut saves $11.5mil so down to $5.5mil over

Moore is no sure fire cut. It does save $2.5mil to cut him but still counts slightly more than that against the cap. So it's keep him for $5mil or cut him for $2.5mil+.
So cut him and you are down to needing $3mil more cut.

Next?

Well, being only 5.5 mil over not including Moore is much better than 17 over knowing you're gonna cut Smith. It's not like its dire straits.

I think we can get a better WR for less than 2.5 mil that we'd save

I think they will restructure Harper's deal for the amount it would cost to cut him. That would save ~$2mil.

I have a hard time believing Greer will be back at his price tag of $5.8mil. I think he'll probably just take a paycut similar to the one suggested about Harper, saving ~$2.2mil.

Then there's the running back conundrum. Cutting Sproles saves ~$3.5mil. Cutting Pierre saves ~$2.4mil. Personally, I cut Sproles. He completely disappeared in the second half of the season. He brought little to the table in the receiving game as his quick first step seemed lost, and he was never much of a factor in the ground or return games. Plus he'll be 31 at the start of next season. Can't justify paying him that much money anymore.

So with all of these cuts combined (I included Will Smith's), the team saves ~$19.2mil, getting the team under the cap by about $2.2mil. Still not nearly enough to sign Graham long term.

However, I expect there will be a bevvy of restructures, and a few surprise cuts leading to having cap room to sign Graham and a couple of cheaper free agents.

The more I look at our free agency splurge from two years ago, the more uncomfortable I get about future years.

Brees
Grubbs
Bunkley
Hawthorne
Lofton
Colston

All of these guys are under contract until 2017, and when you take out Drew's outlier, they average ~$9.6mil a year. That's still frighteningly high.

This is why it makes sense to invest in a guard, wide receiver, and inside linebacker early in the coming drafts. We're going to need guys that can step in once these players become too expensive

I think straight cap talk deserves a thread. Just talk contracts, cuts, restructures

This thread was more for who peeps might be looking at as potential adds
