Key to negotiation was Peyton-Broncos. "Only" 18M in 2012 but if passes 2013 physical, activates 40M in guarantee money, thus 58 Million. Brees is 60 Million.
He will on paper get 20 Million this year and 20 Million next year and there is a 3 day window after the Superbowl where if the Saints wont to cut Brees, they can within that 3 day window, but if not, the rest of the Guarantee money is due.

Are people really this dumb about the business of football?

So many people are asking how we can fit 40 million under the cap. Good god.

Not really. Only someone who didn't follow sports at all would not know about signing bonuses.

There are a lot of complete retards that thought his salary/cap hit was 40 mill.

Per Gus Kattengale

Brees' cap hit

2012-$10.4
2013-$17.4
2014-$18.4
2015-$26.4
2016-$27.4

If that's true, then that means it was even smarter because Saints will likely get a ton more cap room in the next few years with the TV contract

37 million signing bonus prorated over 5 years = 7.4 million dollars per year.

3 million base salary in 2012 = 3 million dollars.

7.4 million + 3 million = 10.4 million dollars. His exclusive franchise tag was a little more than 16 million dollars which was already calculated into the cap (if I'm not mistaken) which allows for about 6 million in cap savings this year.

I'll need more info for a further breakdown in future years, such as option bonuses, base salaries and bonus clauses (such as 5,000 yards passing, pro bowl bonuses, etc).

signing bonus doesn't go against the cap. brady makes around $1mil/yr but he gets the rest of his money in bonuses.

...and Brady has signed contract extentions early to keep his cap hit from getting or staying too high.

If Loomis was the man he would have gotten this done last year.

What does it matter?

Looks like guaranteed money was the issue and that Loomis caved.

You don't know that. We don't know how much guaranteed money was asked for.

Are you really dogging Loomis after all the success the Saints have had since he's been with the Saints?

What the hell are we going to do with an extra 6 million?

So are we going to restructure someone and give them money now or are we going to try to sign someone new for 6 million?
