This is the story of every Gentry team in his 17 years of coaching. At some point, someone needs to tell Gentry to look in the mirror that this defensive inefficiency is because of his coaching and not the players, which he always blames.

Please Lord allow Griff to make the move he knows he needs to make.

This is why we are a bad team

we are 2nd to last in opponents pts off turnovers, at 19.6ppg. Bad decisions, whether by the player or by the coaches philosophy on offense.
We are 5th to last in opponents 2nd chance points, at 13.6ppg. No discipline in blocking out, more worried about getting out and running on offense.

We are 3rd to last in opponents fast break points, at, 15.4ppg. Shows a lack of communication when getting back on defense, and/or a lack of effort to hustle back.
We are 3rd to last in opponents points in the paint, at 52.2ppg. I thought Favors was a great rim protector? i do'nt even blame him for this, our guards and rotation is where i'd put more of the blame for this. This is a big one as to why our defense sucks. Despite our terrible 3 point defense in the bubble, we were a middle of the road defensive team against the 3, mainly b/c teams knew they could get in the paint on us and score or get fouled (we were 7th to last in opponents FTA).

we were 4th to last in opponents ppg at 117.1. Pretty much a staple of a Gentry coached team.

we are 2nd to last in points in the clutch, and dead last in point differential in the clutch. Somehow we are 2nd, not to last, really 2nd, in turnovers in the clutch.
I will blame Gentry on this one somewhat, but also on Jrue and BI more than anyone. They were many times given stupid plays to run, but it really doesn't matter in the clutch. That's where you need to put your big boy pants on and just go out there and get it done. I think BI will get much better at this with more experience, and a good coach will put him and Zion in better positions to score the basketball with more uncontested shots. Just about every game in the NBA comes down to the last few minutes. If you suck in the clutch, you end of with a well below .500 record. Simple as that. Good teams have good closers.

While i have never liked the Gentry hire, and will be very happy when he is relieved of his duties, and i think many of our problems are b/c of him, much blame still needs to go on the players. There is no leader out there and they do things, especially on defense, that you shouldn't need to be coached to do in order to play good. Things that should be ingrained in you from playing basketball your whole life, like getting back and stopping the fast break, like coming from the weakside to cut off the baseline drive, like rotating after a double team. Most of this is giving the extra effort/hustle more than anything. And one thing is obvious, they don't communicate on the court on the defensive side enough, and they don't all think quick enough. There's a difference in how you guard the pick as a big man when Jrue is the one going around the pick compared to everyone else. You should know your personnel on both sides of the ball, and be able to make quick game time decisions on how to play them. The vast majority of that comes from watching and actually paying attention to film.

And one last thing i'll say about Gentry. One thing i cannot stand about him is his inability to exploit matchups or things he sees in games. I'm not trying to say Okafor is some awesome player, but he really is a very skilled big man in the post. Why wouldn't you try to use him more with your 2nd team and play through him more? It doesn't need to be every game, you play matchups. He can score on just about any backup 5 in the league. We saw hardly any of Jrue posting up this year. Jrue is bigger and stronger than most people that guard him. He was very good at this in our playoff year run. Run design plays to get him the ball on the block, just like you do for Zion. Run plays to get favorable switches onto a guy like Jrue and let him post the smaller guy up. It just feels like he has a plan on offense, and he doesn't want to deviate from it. He wants everyone to play the same way regardless of who's in the game or who the opponent is. Not one time did he try to set something up to get Jrue or BI on Bogdonavich against Sacramento the first game, when we lost and our season was over. Lonzo was taking him to the goal and scoring. LONZO! if he can do it, surely Jrue and BI can at will, so run a god damn play to get the switch needed so they can take him. Make Walton have to take this guy out of the game b/c his defense is that bad. Guy only had a career night against us offensively.

Rant over. Ready for the draft and the offseason, hopefully with a new coach.

Y’all are going to be so disappointed when Alvin sticks around for another year due to financial circumstances.

The philosophy is fine so long as you have high IQ players running it.

This has always been Gentry’s problem though, he is a one size fits all coach. If you have the players that can wear that well, it will look brilliant, like those historic GS teams, like his WC finals Suns team, but if you don’t have those players? You get the mess we saw most of this year. Like we’ve seen so many times with most of his teams.

he's proven what he does without HOF talent. No one expects him to win 50 games with the Clippers teams he had, or the Suns teams without Nash, but everywhere he's been, his teams have gotten progressively worst, and we've seen numerous other coaches out there lose HOF type players and not have their team go into bottom 10 mode.

It doesn't take much to coach HOF talent. They barely even need a coach. All they really need is an analyst to break down film for them to prepare for each game.
