Would people be happy with this pick at 6? I must admit the only live full game that I watched was Cal's first round match up against Hawaii which was his worst game of the season. But, I watched and read some scouting reports and am starting to warm to the idea of Brown in a Pels uniform. Brown's ceiling seems to be sky high. If he develops his shot, then he could become the premier wing we've desperately needed for so long. Also, this piece on ESPN is pretty awesome.

Apparently, he is a very smart kid.
quote:

Here’s a snapshot: He learned Spanish during his freshman year at Cal and said that while improvement is still needed, he is confident he can conduct interviews in the language. He said being bilingual is good for personal growth and for business and he wants to learn three more languages by age 25. He took classes such at Cal on global poverty and practice, theoretical studies and student activism as a freshman, because he wanted to be able to debunk “a lot of misconceptions about people who are poor, homeless or etc.” He owns and can play an acoustic guitar (“I’m not going to toot my own horn. I’m all right.”). He interned two months at Base Ventures with Moore (“I was happy to find out that Jaylen was very keen to learn and take advantage of the tech eco system that thrives right in his backyard,” Moore said).

Desire to be an elite defender.
quote:

Everyone is so focused on the offensive side of the ball,” Isiah Thomas said. “There are very few players that I have run into who are as gifted as he is athletically and offensively. He wants to learn to play defense and be a great defender.”

Strong Work Ethic
quote:

“I’m a big believer that it takes 20,000 hours to be great. Kobe put in those hours. I’m trying to chase that model, that representation that Kobe laid out for us. He set a great example and I’m trying to follow.”

Could just be a fluff/hype piece from his camp to raise his draft stock, but everything I read in that article makes me hopeful for the kid's future. Obviously would be a project pick which most people think we won't do, but he fits the mold of the athletic wing that Gentry was talking about wanting towards the end of the season.

Thoughts?

Big issues with shooting, handles, and decision-making skills. Could develop to be great, but much higher likelihood of being a decent defender with a below average shot and average handle. His whole college game was based on barreling to the basket, but his left hand was exposed to end the year and his outside shooting was always poor. Bad TO rate (18%) and 3PT % (29%). On top of that his steals rate is not good. considering his length and athleticism and block rate nothing to write home about: 1.2 stls and 0.9 blks per 100.

Good kid and maybe a great player as he certainly has all the physical tools, but more likely to be considered a bust unless he gets on with a good program who can develop him properly. Not entirely sure that he fits what the Pelicans need.

Please God no, he was not productive at Cal. Jamal Murray, Kris Dunn, or Buddy Hield in that order for me.

I'm sold.

The New Orleans Pelicans have been in desperate need of "smart" players for forever.

He is intelligent in life, but supposedly does not have a very high BBIQ/feel for the game.

Yah, I'm currently thinking:
1)Dunn
2)Murray
3) Jaylen Brown
4) Hield

I completely understand the concerns with Brown. He likely isn't NBA ready, but he undoubtedly has the body and athleticism to be a force on the wing on both sides of the ball. It's a project with the potential to bust, but also, tremendous upside. This article shedding light on his character and work ethic makes me believe that he is less likely to be a bust. Thus, he moved up on my board given high ceiling and floor that crept a bit higher in my eyes.

Then Frick him.

But that almost assures us that Dell will draft him of he's there at 6.
