It's live now, I will update with notes as I listen to it. Went HARD on the way Zion and Ingram are officiated.
quote:
Griffin: "We failed. We did not protect (Zion)."
quote:
Griff says him and his organization takes blame for not bringing appropriate sense of urgency to the league about the situation regarding contact to Zion.
quote:
Griff says Zion injury was avoidable - saying that because Zion has not been officiated correctly. Says they have sent film to the league showing how Zion has been hit this year under the rim.
quote:
David Griffin blasts the way Zion Williamson is officiated, blames the way he's reffed for the injury. Said other teams have been able to have "open season" on him.
quote:
David Griffin says SVG's coaching staff has sent in video clips and other measures have been taken by the Pelicans to make the league aware of the high amount of uncalled hits on Zion and BI this season, but ultimately, "we failed."
quote:
Griff says Zion has been playing through an injury on the other hand that probably required surgery, but Zion wanted to continue playing.

Griff talking about the shitty officiating and the mauling that the refs are allowing when guarding Zion. Bravo!

Yeah, Griff is DEFINITELY getting fined after this one.
Going to have to rewatch it after it's over.

Good, something had to be said. If it was fractured from multiple hits to the hands by defenders then something needs to be done.

Should of been done weeks ago but at least it was done

It's about time this organization called out the refs. Unfortunately they waited until an injury occured before they finally spoke out.

Good on David for waiting after Zion gets injured to attack the refs.

Bout damn time he says something. If Grif would’ve defended our sweet chunky prince like this a few months ago then we might’ve been undefeated still

Apparently the coaching staff has been sending film into the league office all year complaining about it, but nothing has been done. I guess they figured now it's time to go public, frick the fines.

Waited until after an injury before making it a public issue. Too little too late. Will come across as whining to other organizations and media.

And it wouldn't have come across as whining before an injury? That logic makes no sense.
If anything he's got something to back up his claims now.

Stan just went after them also.
He said he really doesn't believe the league office cares and they look at it as teams whining about them getting it wrong.

Seems clear they have been proactive in pushing the league on this through the right channels and this was just the last straw and it’s gloves off now.
They are taking blame because it’s the smart angle to take, but it’s taking self blame that really just leads one to blame the league even more. It’s pretty brilliant tbh.

IMO this is best angle they could have possibly played to win the media cycle on this.
You are absolutely going to stillhave some A-tier shite takes by some of the NBA hot take artists, guys like Shaq or Barkley that are going to come at this about their own egos and desire to project out his much tougher they were, but this is the perfect way to go at this.
Had they done it before the narrative would have been mixed at best, if not creating a backlash for us attempting to whine our way to a better call.
Now Zion is out, you let it be known you were doing it the right way and contacting the league within proper channels, but it fell on deaf ears. Now you take blame, but not really, and all of the spotlight is on the league for not listening, for not adjusting, and for their biggest next gen star getting injured because they are taking a hands off approach and not protecting a player.

Masterful Strategy from Griffin!

Listening to the full conference and I like that Griff goes into pretty extensive detail, including on BI. Goes pretty hard about BI’s ejection contrasted with specific examples of the exact same thing happening TO Ingram and Zion with different outcomes.
