Wouldn't mind him as a bench role player for cheap. He's been lighting it up in summer league and love his game.

He isn't ready. Let him show out in the G League before you open a spot for him.

Pretty sure the Bulls will have first crack at him.

I do think he becomes a better NBA player than college. Much like Malachi Dupre, even though it's a diff sport.

Honestly, those highlights look more impressive than most of his resume at LSU. I don't think I'd be opposed to letting him have a 2-way spot, but he needs time in the G League to get acclimated. He has really good potential with that shot, though.

That's the main thing. I've watched him a lot the past two years (Free student bball tickets) and he does have potential. He just needs better coaching, experience and to add some weight. Not sure if a lot of people remember but he was Mr. Basketball coming out of the state of Florida (which also had Ben Simmons that year).

He just had a habit of disappearing at LSU, but we would not be asking him to be a star. However, if he could keep teams honest on D with his 3, he could be very valuable down the line. He is a little on the small side for 2s in the NBA, but pairing him with Holiday could help out there. Can he defend effectively, though? That's always a huge question coming into the league.

That's what he'll be working on the next few years in the GLeague.

From Draft Express:

quote:

Defensively, the tools are there for Blakeney to be a solid on-ball defender, but he is far from a stopper. He has solid length to contest jump shots and the lateral quickness to stay in front of the ball which could allow him to be a pest when he is locked in. He helped his team rebound by crashing the glass for 4.6 defensive rebounds which he loves to turn into transition opportunities with his speed.

quote:

LSU had one of the worst defenses in the nation last season and this can partly be attributed to Blakeney's poor energy and awareness, which affected his level of impact. His effort level has waned at times as he doesn't always work hard to defend and fight through screens. He also doesn't always see action off the ball and is a step slow to rotate over or chase his man off cuts, so he'll have to improve his awareness to defend the complex schemes of NBA offenses. There are also questions about his ability to add strength as his frame hasn't changed that much in two years and is holding him back from become a more versatile defender, as he can get bullied by bigger guards. - Source: LINK / ©DraftExpress

Color me shocked, the project player from LSU actually looks like a decent project. Of all the draft picks, the board "scouted" Blakeney the most. None of us are dumb for hoping we'd pick him up.

The biggest fallacy is that TD.com wants every LSU player on the Saints/Pelicans. No, we want the LSU players that actually have potential to be professionals. The biggest stinks I've seen are Collins and picking SJB over Landry. Look how that turned out.

Another point, you didn't see people banging the drum to snag Hornsby or Quarterman. People see LSU and roll their eyes, but the truth is the ones that CONSISTENTLY come up, come up for a reason.

I can't remember who it was but I was told differently when I quipped that he'd make a solid NBA player after a few years of real coaching and development.

Fact his, the kid has decent size, is a freak athlete and put up good numbers in college despite never being open, often shooting by outjumping the defender from deep and still making the basket with a hand in his face.

He showed hustle as evidenced by his rebounding numbers.

It's not like he's lazy or doesn't have the tools to play defense. He just has to learn it, and he wasn't learning much under Johnny Jones.

By the end of the season his freshman year, he was the best player on the team, and that includes Simmons.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if in 2 or 3 years he's in a regular NBA rotation, maybe even starting by year 4 or 5.

That was easy to do while Johnny Jones was at LSU. Jones was getting the attention for all the wrong reasons.

I agree that Blakeney may need a year in the G League, but I wouldn't mind him getting a shot here in N.O. He's averaging 25 points in the summer league. Bulls fans all over social media are calling for Chicago to get Cameron Payne out of there and sign AB.
