Yngwie Malmsteen's Legacy

I've always been impressed at the technical prowess and unbelievable talent that Yngwie Malmsteen possesses. The way this guy shreds on guitar is a testament to his natural ability. He never achieved the status of guitar gods like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, but I think he definitely deserves a spot amongst the best guitarists of all time.

I have always been impressed that a guy 30 pounds overweight, his gut hanging over the waist of his leather pants, actually possessed the capability to jumpkick guitar picks into the crowd as he was playing.

The reason why he hasn't gained enough respect is because he isn't well known in the mainstream like EVH and Hendrix. Malmsteen is only really famous to people who play guitar. Similar to Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, and Joe Satriani. All 3 of them are excellent musicians but because they havent had anything hit mainstream they will be underrated.

He's a motherfricker playing the guitar, but his music sucks. Most session musicians have as much technical skill as he does, but it doesn't mean shite if you can't write decent songs. Listening to someone basically jerk off with a guitar is pointless to me.

I think that, like other proto-Neo-Classical shreddists (Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, etc.), his artistic drive and creativity went into developing his style to such an extent that a catchy tune became secondary by default. I can't even think of one top 40 song featuring shredded 32nd or 64th note guitar playing.
As has been stated already, the vast majority of the listening public just wants a melody that they can hum along to. Hendrix and EVH delivered those, Malmsteen...not so much.
No denying his chops, though.

I saw him years ago and he was still doing this. Yngwie Malmsteen will always be a guitar god regardless of his lack of mainstream success.

No. They don't. I despise his instrumental wankfest style but that is laughable.
