VARIETY link
Bassist Joe Osborn died of pancreatic cancer on Dec. 14 at 81.
Osborn was no ordinary studio musician. From the early 1960s to the mid-1970s, Osborn was ubiquitous, playing on tunes as silly as The Monkees theme and as sublime as Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
He OWNS this song. Aquarius / Let the Sun shine in
RIP, Joe.

Yea, I remember him.
He was a good one.
Carol Kaye is still around, isn't she?

You didn't mention he was from LA

While the concept of the Monkees may have been silly, some of the songs have great guitar and bass lines all due to musicians like Osborne and others that made up the "Wrecking Crew"

w/JO, James Burton, and Puddler Harris, three members of Ricky Nelson's early '60s band were from north LA

Thought Carol Kaye was the wrecking crew bassist.

quote:What we now call the "Wrecking Crew" was not a band with fixed membership. It was a pool of a few dozen session musicians who got first call on plum gigs. Osborn, Kaye, and the late Lyle Ritz (see the obit thread) were among the most sought-after bassists.

The "First Call Gang" guitarists, pre-Wrecking Crew (1961).
Standing L-R: Unknown, Unknown, Vince Terri, Howard Heitmeyer, George Smith, Al Viola, Professor Elloriagia, Howard Roberts, Laurindo Almeida, Nick Bonnie, Tommy Tedesco, Bob Bain, Barney Kessel, Tony Rizzi, Joseph Robert "Bobby" Gibbons, Tiny Timbrell, René Hall
Kneeling L-R: Milt Norman, Bill Pitman, Vito Mumolo
A few of these guys, notably Tommy Tedesco and Bill Pitman, would later be part of the WC.

Most of the "wrecking crew" guitarists didn't read or had limited ability to read sheet music, but Tedesco was the exception, and was said by the other musicians that he could read fly sh*t on paper if you put it in front of him.

Yep and she is a wonderful person. I'm a bass player and reached out to her a few years ago to get some tips and pick her brain and wound up emailing back and forth for months. Very gracious lady and a genius.
