Why didn't Debbie Gibson make the jump from teen idol to mainstream star?

She was hot (still is,) she had talent (wrote her own songs.) She didn't fall into drug abuse or self destructive behavior. She's done a little Broadway, and found a niche among the gays, but mainstream stardom has eluded her. Meanwhile, Britney is a trainwreck but her juggernaut keeps rolling along.

I think when she ended her career after she found out she turned her boyfriend back then, the New Kid on the block Jon Knight, gay.
