I hate to be "that guy" but can we really call this Steely Dan any longer without Walter?

I mean, I like Fagen as much as the next guy, so shouldn't this be "Donald Fagen featuring the music of Steely Dan"?

What am I missing?

Apparently that's what Fagen wanted but the managers or marketing people said it was a bad idea.

I'm looking at steelydanofficial.com and it says:

quote:

On all shows, Fagen will be joined once again by the crack group of brilliant and acclaimed musicians who have famously supported him in recent years, including: Jon Herington (guitar), Keith Carlock (drums), Freddie Washington (bass), Jim Beard (keyboards), a four-piece horn section and three backup vocalists.

Not having a guitarist like Herrington, Larry Carlton, Elliot Randal, and others to perform with them would be more fatal to the groups music than the loss of Becker. Becker was a great song writer producer type, but almost all of the classic guitar riffs associated with Steely Dan were created and recorded by session players. I have seen them live many times, what Becker did on guitar added little to the music, it always pissed me off that he would not take the time to learn the second guitar part on the "Reelin in the Years" solo's he just fumbled through the chords, and his "stoner" rant in the middle of the shows ate up a lot of time that for which I had paid to to hear their music.

Herington's playing was absolutely perfect for their music a few days ago. None of the "solos" were totally self-indulgent. It was paired well with the background horns and such. I never really got into steely dan, i was there for the doobie brothers. But i enjoyed that guitar playing.

YES!! The stoner rants always made me realize I had to go the bathroom and get another beer. RIP Walter, but...

I've seen them 4 times. Herrington was with them all 4 times. Only once did Becker "muddy" the water with too much "chicken picking". He could have just been turned up more in the mix that night.

Keith Carlock is an absolute monster on drums.

This x1000. When I saw them in 2006 Becker was only on stage about 20% of the time and seemed disinterested. If they went by Steely then, they should now as well.
