Is his guitar tone better when he plays the Stratocaster with the ash wood body or is it better when he plays the Stratocaster with the alder wood body?

The man at the music store told me that the Strat has a different tone depending on whether the body is made from ash or alder, so, I'm doing research into this issue.

Thanks.

I'm not biting. All single coil Strats are essentially the same, tonally.

WHAT??!!

The man at the music store told me that you could tell the difference, dammit.

I demand answers from this August Body.

"Alder has a more balanced acoustic tone, where ash tends to me more scooped in the mids in comparison."

Said the guy in the booth as he mixed another pint of poly for his spray gun.

Oh yes. The difference is as clear as can be.

PS My guy at the music store is a fictional sales person at Guitar Center.

These discussions remind me of an anecdote. My memory is shot, so I lose a lot of the little details, but my best guess is that it is a song we've all heard and a player that rock music students of the 60s and 70s would recognize the name. Anyway, on the recording, which was a studio jam session, this player - again I apologize for the omission in details - comes in and rips off a great solo during the jam part - the story goes this was on an ES-335 or ES-345 that he picked up, didn't tune or warm up with - just a guitar they had in the studio.

After it was over, someone complimented him to the effect of, "That was fantastic." He replies, "Yeah, there was a great vibe during that session. I always wanted to play one of those guitars."

So, not only hadn't he played THE guitar, he had never played the model of guitar before and delivered a commendable performance. So, again, it is 99% the player, and 1% the gear (at most).

Yes, I forgot to mention that.

Best David Gilmour Strat tone:

1) ash body maple fretboard

2) ash body rosewood fretboard

3) ash body ebony fretboard

4) alder body maple

5) alder body rosewood

6) alder body ebony

So, all Pink Floyd fans, hear me now: get out your records, go on YouTube, then post in this thread with your opinion of Mr. Gilmour's best Strat tone created by the particular tone woods in question. Thanks.
