Don't know how many here have heard some of the songs off of Petty's Album Southern Accents, but most people I know have never heard these, only his hits. Thought this board might appreciate them, as they are about the south, and I would like to know what you think.
Just a brief background on it, it was originally to be a concept album about the South, but after frustration and drugs (and a broken hand) Tom chose to leave some songs off the album and include others (such as Don't come around here no more) that did not fit the original idea as well. Ultimately it was cut from a double album down to a single.
Hope you enjoy these, some are outtakes, some were put on the album or released later

Rebels - powerful anthem

Southern Accents - A gem, slower, but one of his best songs I think

Trailer - original 80's cut

Dogs On The Run - more about a southerner leaving home than the south it's self, still good

Great album. Dogs on the Run is a fantastic tune. I remember reading somewhere that this was the album that really started the hatred between Tom and Stan Lynch.

Lots of drugs. ...and they couldn't get rid of Dave Stewart also. He wouldn't leave until Lynch threw him out.

Petty was almost Southern Gothic with this album. I certainly think the single "Southern Accents" qualifies.

I read somewhere that Tom went to one of Stewart's parties at his house. Needless to say there was alotta drugs and after a midgit offered Tom acid, he went to the bathroom, locked the door, climbed out the bathroom window, and went home.

The Pack Up the Plantation live album that followed this is excellent too. I love the live version of Southern Accents on it.

Great record, need to pick this one up on vinyl.

I've been obsessed with Long After Dark and Hard Promises for the past few weeks. His albums are so good.

Long After Dark is criminally underrated. It's a good album, and one story town is a great track
If you haven't heard it, Keeping Me Alive is an outtake from Long After Dark. While more acoustic than the songs on the album it is still pretty good.
