Skynyrd always had 3 great ones, but that lineup was absolutely incredible live.

He mentioned how he was a good friend of Hughie

I sure as hell hope so; they were in the same band for years

That's not always true, though - guys can be in bands together for decades and hate each other's guts.

The implication was back to Florida when they were all trying to make it - Johnny is younger than you might think, born in 1959 - Thomasson was closer to Donnie's age, IIRC, (Johnny is the "oops - we can still get pregnant baby of the Van Zant clan).

I'm aware of Johnny's age; he's a year older than me. Hadn't really thought about Hughie's age tho. I know all of those Jax bands; LS, Blackfoot, Hatchet plus the Outlaws (I know they're from Tampa) were all pretty tight and supportive of each other, just thought it was odd that Johnny would say he was friends with Hughie. I've always thought Johnny was the absolute worst choice of vocals for LS; my #1 choice? Dale Krantz Rossington.....yes seriously.

The Outlaws had been around forever - formed the same year as Skynyrd - Hughie joined in 1967,when he was 15 or so. They were opening for Skynyrd in the 1970s and Ronnie reportedly told Clive Davis he would be stupid to not sign The Outlaws to a record contract.

Dave Hlubek (RIP) told me once that before he started Hatchet all the bands in Jax toured all the same bars and once they finished the "tour" they would change their band name and start over

Skynyrd was "My Backyard" then "The Noble Five" - then a shite ton of names like Conqueror Worm, Sons of Satan, the Wildcats and who knows how many others? They were The One Percent (or "One Percent") for at least a couple of years before making the final change to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

So, that sounds like that's what they did.
