Curious as to how fans feel about this. From his first release spirituality and faith informed practically all of his lyrics. Then, all of a sudden it changed, changed to the point that recently he seems to have disavowed his faith and God altogether. Does anyone know what happened to cause this? I still love his music, but it's a little disturbing how his life seems to have turned.

My all-time favorite lyrics are for "Penetration".

How can you top this, to go along with the sweet arse riff of chord frickery that goes with the song...

If it isn't making dollars,
Then it isn't making sense,
If you aren't moving units,
Then you're not work the expense...

If you really want to make a difference,
You had best remember this,
If it isn't penetration,
Then it isn't worth a kiss.....

Brrrrnnnnnnaaaannaaa, Brrrnnnnnaaaanaaaa

Examples:

The beginning

quote:

A hole that big I'd never seen before in the tummy of a good ol' boy who always wanted more. Then just yesterday I saw him satisfied. It seems he'd met the hole fixin' man, much to his surprise. But are you for real? Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, you fixed my friend can you fix me? Hey Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, I'm as broken as a boy can be, so how 'bout fixin' me? And all the charms that never were enough it seems the hole was always twice as big no matter what it was, but to see him now is almost to believe that maybe Mr. Hole Fixin' Man might have what I need. But are you for real? Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, you fixed my friend can you fix me? Hey Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, I'm as broken as a boy can be, so how 'bout fixin' me. Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, he says you died on Calvary. Hey Mr. Hole Fixin' Man, if you've got proof I will believe, so how 'bout fixin' me. Won't you please, won't you please. Start by fixin' me, start by fixin' me.

The middle

quote:

Deep green hills whose shoulders fade, into the gray tall wet grass. Whose flesh makes fools of grazing sheep, whose fleecing makes a fool of me. And who shall I blame for this sweet and heavy trouble? For every stupid struggle? I don't know. I could buy you a drink. I could tell you all about it. I could tell you why I doubt it, and why I still believe. But I can't say it like I sing it. And I can't sing it like I think it. And I can't think it like I feel it. And I don't feel a thing. Oh no - I don't feel a thing. And who shall I blame for this sweet and heavy trouble? For every stupid struggle? I don't know. I could buy you a drink. I could tell you all about it. I could tell you why I doubt it, and why I still believe it. And why I need it. And what the pharasies don't see. And we'd have more drinks. We'd speak of so many things. But I don't know you, and you don't know me.

The end

quote:

You've heard the story You know how it goes Once upon a garden We were lovers with no clothes Fresh from the soil We were beautiful and true In control of our emotions 'Til we ate the poison fruit And now it's hard to be Hard to be Hard to be a decent human being Wait just a minute You expect me to believe That all this misbehaving Grew from one enchanted tree? And, helpless to fight it, We should all be satisfied With this magical explanation For why the living die? And why it's hard to be Hard to be Hard to be a decent human being Childbirth is painful We toil to grow our food Ignorance made us hungry Information made us no good Every burden misunderstood I swung my tassel To the left side of my cap Knowing after graduation There would be no going back And no congratulations From my faithful family Some of whom are already fasting To intercede for me Because it's hard to be Hard to be Hard to be a decent human being

From what I can tell, there was nothing sudden about it. I think he's always been asking these questions. Consider the lyrical content of songs like Letter From A Concerned Follower from his 2nd EP, and Bad Things To Such Good People from his 3rd. It seems to me that he always had these unanswerable questions that he had to confront on every album. Even while he would record phenomenal versions of classic church hymns, you get the feeling that he is deeply troubled by what his faith simply cannot answer.

quote:

It's weird to think of all the things
That have not been keeping up with the times
It's ten o'clock the sun has now
Just begun to set the western hills on fire

I hear that you don't change
How do you expect to keep up with the trends?
You won't survive the information age
Unless you plan to change the truth to accommodate
The brilliance of men, the brilliance of men

Some folks think we're better now
Social evolution's new synthetic will
Will keep us on a straighter path
As better men use brand new math
With no wrong answers

I'm just a little bit worried
Do you have some sort of plan?
Have you been finally defeated
By the cunning of these fully evolved men?

I think if you go back, album by album... EP by EP in chronological order, I think you'll find that the only one where David is confident in his faith is on the Tooth & Nail release, the Whole EP.
