NY Times article
TLDR warning. Had no idea about this; I dont remember it happening. Just ran across this on another forum. Seems like a ton of incredibly important masters were lost back in 2008. A whole wide range of genres and decades were impacted.
Here's a slightly shorter article.

And the list of music figures possibly affected by the blaze reads like a Hall of Fame induction ballot, with icons like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Guy, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Elton John, Chuck Berry, and Aretha Franklin losing work alongside contemporary artists including Nirvana, Eminem, Hole, Snoop Dogg, and Soundgarden.

Dang. Never heard about that.
There are enough copies that we can still hear the music, which is probably why it wasn't all over the news at the time.

True, but like it explains later on, you can't get the depth that the masters have. So whenever the next HD+++ audio format comes out, these albums won't be able to be released.
To not be able to have Nevermind in TruHD+++ is a big deal. That sucks.
