Notes from watching it

The most poignant parts are George on I me mine and working out Octopus’s garden on piano with Ringo

Paul’s daughter heather age 7 in the studio is too cute

Yoho is like the shadow of death and is attached at the hip to John at all times

The look of sheer boredom Ringo has constantly

How Paul is looking at John on let it be and the long and winding road

How badly Phil Spector butchered some of the songs specifically the long and winding road

Paul hated spector’s version especially the harps and the women’s chorale parts

John didn’t like let it be, he said Paul was trying to write another bridge over troubled water

John playing bass on his guitar on Kansas City shows how important Paul on bass was to the band

The sheer joy Billy Preston brought to the studio and to the band

The very telling conversation of Paul and John where Paul is talking about playing live and how sloppy they would get from nerves. John looks like he wants to tell Paul to shut up.

The uncomfortable exchange between George and Paul where George says he will do whatever Paul wants

The dominating nature of Paul in the studio over the rest of the guys

How good George and John could be on guitar

How withdrawn John could be during the sessions because he was hooked on heroin

I really hope one day they release the out takes, Paul said it is just too painful. There are hours of footage that have never been seen publicly

John on the hard stuff, fat Paul, Disconnected George (who had quit during the sessions) and a drunk and stoned Ringo... what could go wrong?

I have heard (in Glyn Johns' book) that they initially just wanted to record some cover tunes and just jam, but John had a bunch of old songs on the scrap heap and Paul was forced to try to match his, so he rushed a bunch of his own in.

Phil Spector ruined the released album. As he did with most of All Things Must Pass.

I like their jam version of Besame Mucho - that kind of thing makes it clear these four guys were doing what they were meant to do at that time of their lives - all the negative baggage notwithstanding.

George bringing in Billy kept the band together a little longer. They didn't want to show their bad side in front of a guest. The rooftop concert is fantastic

He had a similar motivation in bringing in Clapton for While My Guitar Gently Weeps. That accomplished several things-

This, plus, this was a guitarist that Paul couldn't feel superior too - equal, maybe, but not superior.

Paul's ego was an important factor in the band's success, but it was also a big point of friction between himself and John. John had other things going on as well (and was pretty much an a-hole once he hooked up with Yoko), but Paul's ego was always the 600lb gorilla in the room.

Double-edged sword as talent often turns out to be.

Doing some research, one reason for John lacking interest was that just six weeks before the rehearsals began, Yoko had had a miscarriage following a drug bust.

Supposedly there are hours of outtakes that show a lot more of the contentiousness between them all. Would love to see what didn't make the final cut.

Apparently the moment of George quitting was filmed, but left out of the movie. However the John and George fistfight (witnessed by George Martin) was not filmed.
