I recently picked up an American Standard HSS Shawbucker Strat. It's got the Custom Shop Fat 50's in the neck and middle positions. My question: is it normal for the neck pickup to be slanted right to left when looking from the bridge up the neck?

Yes, all strats are like that. Completely normal. IIRC, it has something to do with the magnets.

The staggered height of the magnet pole pieces is to even out the volume difference between the lower strings and the higher strings. The pickup can also be slanted using the height adjustment screws to further fine tune this. The overall distance between the pickup and strings can also be varied using the same screws, some believe a greater separation increases sustain, at the cost of volume, it is really a matter of experimenting and deciding what is best to your ear.

You'll enjoy those fat 50's. Fantastic quack and hollow scoopy sound from them. Exactly the way a strat is supposed to sound IMO.

Treble pickup is very thin and trebly if you run it wide open, but if you roll the tone back to about 6 and turn the volume down to about 8, they just sing. Awesome for chording and nice and fat for leads. The neck sounds great, very SRVish. Lots of highs and lows with no mids.
