So, Boston played in my town last night....

(TLDR: It was a good show, lol)
My friend sends me alerts for many concerts, and Boston was no exception. He sent me an alert for their shows in Savannah and Atlanta, and I promptly deleted both. Sorry, not interested. He sent me a third alert which I deleted too....he called me later and said "Did you notice that last email was for a show in Augusta?" Hmmm....a show at our local 3,000 seat venue, a 7 minute drive from my house. Maybe I should go after all? I mean, not long before hearing about this show, I'd played some of their music for my daughter, and she liked it....so, myself, my daughter, and my friend made the short trek over to the Bell Auditorium last night.
I figured it'd be a decent night out, and I'd get to revisit some good tunes from years past. But you know what? I have to admit, the band KILLED it. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but this show might have surpassed the other time I saw them, back in '87 on the Third Stage tour. Of course the late Brad Delp is missed, but the guy they have now was more than serviceable.
Anyhow, some comments of note:
--NO songs from either 'Corporate America' or 'Life, Love, And Hope', so that's an automatic bonus, LOL
--The classics were all played well, but IMO the highlight of the night was the Walk On medley (from the album of the same name)....all three of us agreed that it was both an audio AND visual assault, and was the runaway fave of the night. The sounds that Tom Scholz squeezed out of his keyboard rig were seemingly from another world, lol... Even the casual fans who'd never heard it were slack-jawed by the end of the song, and gave it a well-deserved ovation.
--No opening band for this show. They promptly came on at 8, the lights came on around 10:05, and I walked in my front door around 10:20 or so....for an old-timer like me, you couldn't ask for a better situation, LOL
--I'd say if it wasn't a sellout, it was awfully close. The previous night, by contrast, they played one of the sheds in Atlanta, so I'm glad I got to catch 'em in a more intimate setting instead.
--My daughter (who's 9) said the show was "amazing", and like I said before, it far exceeded my expectations. Besides the band being musically tight, the light show was pretty classy too. In particular, there was this "lightning"-type visual effect during the organ jam in "Walk On" that was bad-arse, but I couldn't possibly describe it, LOL...
Anyway, turned out to be a great way to spend a Sunday night, and super happy that the show was actually closer than the local movie theatre...for once, no 2-3 hour drive involved :D

Well I heard they're just another band out of Boston..... On the road trying to make ends meet
Seriously, I wish I would've seen them years ago because Delp had some pipes and I think Third Stage is underrated.

If you get the chance, go see them. Like I said, they were as solid as when I saw 'em on the Third Stage tour. I'd blown off seeing them again for the longest time, because of sub-par albums...then when Brad died, I pretty much wrote 'em off completely. Thankfully, my buddy nudged me into seeing them again, the short distance being the selling point. So glad I went.
The vocalist they have now does the music justice. While it's a damn shame about Brad on a personal level, I'm afraid he might've not been up to the task in 2016 on a professional level...some of the later clips I heard with him on vocals, he was showing some signs of struggle....

No way they´re all alive.

Who's "they"? lol
I mean, Tom Scholz is still there, and so is Gary Pihl (he's been there since Third Stage). It's always been Tom's band (with Brad a close second, rest his soul), with some ringers to round out the rest of the lineup. The "original lineup" love is a little misguided, since their overall participation was limited in the studio...

My bad. Thought they were a band. Also didn´t know they kept at it after two albums.

I guess they're a band like Dire Straits or ELO were bands...at the end of the day, one guy was "mission control" for each of 'em.
"Kept at it" is relative, since they only have 6 albums after 40 years

Yep this....Tom Scholz is Boston; the "original" lineup were just hired guns.

Yup. Which is why, over the years, I've chuckled when someone says the reason he or she would never see them is because it isn't the so-called original lineup. That lineup was mostly smoke & mirrors by the record label. Now, that said, their last three albums have given many other reasons not to see them, I'll admit that
But like I mentioned in the OP, with the exception of the terrific "Walk On" suite, the songs from those albums are absent from the set list...

Steely Dan is another example of a "band" that fits that description.

Thanks for the report. Makes me want to go see them.
I wore out the first two albums and waited impatiently for years for the always rumored third album. Then it was just okay. I honestly did not know there were any albums other than those three.

No "Hitch a Ride" No care
Show was shite without that song
I saw them back in the 80's in Atlanta. They were one of the best shows I have ever seen. Played an extended version of Hitch a Ride as a third encore. It was unreal

Well Twenty 49, I can't fault anyone for not knowing they had any other albums...I mean, Scholz waited 'til 1994, 2003, and 2014 to release more music, so he certainly wasn't in a hurry to capitalize on Third Stage, heh. With the exception of the already-mentioned "Walk On" suite, I couldn't in good conscience recommend anything else from those three albums. The last two albums, in particular, sound like they were recorded on the cheap, which is puzzling for a guy who's supposed to be a stickler in the studio....
