Actually I'm wrong. It's not the VIP, but the Iron Pass or something. Still has access to air conditioned tents and separate beer/food lines, but no special viewing area or anything.

But I agree with your point. They're mostly given away to sponsors and vendors, who then give them out to employees. Not sure where my friend got his, but he had 4 for Saturday and 2 for Sunday.

That's the biggest complaint I hear from folks who pay for VIP tickets: big crowds of free VIPers in their "VIP beer lines" and taking up all the space in the AC tents. They're making it to where no one wants to purchase VIP because you get the same experience without it.

I know you're not disagreeing with me. I just think it's crazy that they keep doing it (it isn't just Sloss). I'm certainly not buying VIP until I stop hearing this complaint.

Haven't heard that complaint about Sloss, but I've never really talked to anyone that has been with VIP passes. Just about everyone I know going this weekend though has either those Iron passes, or VIP passes. Some bought, some got free.

I don't think I'd ever buy VIP because I'm a cheapskate.

The Iron passes were only $170 when I bought my tickets. I could see myself doing that.

I'm with you on their VIP tickets though. I don't see the value on spending $325 per ticket for a "special viewing area." It's not a super expensive ticket, but it's a huge jump when compared to $99 tickets. I don't mind standing in beer lines enough to justify a $200 price jump.

Yeah, that's not bad. I've easily paid that for 2 night Phish runs before, and 3 night Panic runs back in the day.

Man, even with the Iron Passes, not sure I'd go back to this. Weather is just too iffy in Alabama in July and the rain just put a damper on things Saturday. Spent most of my time there in the tents staying dry. Tents weren't that crowded and the drink lines went quick.

Glad I got to see Charles Bradley. That was fun. Should have left before Widespread Panic. They were awful.

Crowd seemed really thin compared to 2 years ago, but maybe the rain had something to do with that. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the last year for this event.

His show was amazing.

I did leave before their set. Glad to know we didn't miss anything special (I was sure we wouldn't). In fact, we left during Run The Jewels. We wanted to stick around for Cherub, but we didn't feel like hanging around for over an hour for them.

ETA: Of the bands I saw, the bolded ones put on a great show:

Wilder
Ruston Kelly
John Moreland - he needs some more upbeat stuff to complement his arsenal. He has nothing to get the crowd into it. Still, this dude is an amazing songwriter.
Charles Bradley
Spoon
Needtobreathe
- Was not expecting much, but this might have been the best show of the weekend. We will be picking up some of their stuff.
Run The Jewels - funny to hear Bernie supporters rail on against the man trying to hold the poor man down

Ages & Ages - great harmonies
Nerves Baddington
Lawrence
- absolutely amazing show! These kids can sing.
Hiss Golden Messenger
K Flay
Judah & the Lion
Phantogram - really disappointed with their set. It was so boring. Not sure what I was expecting, but this was a huge let-down for me.
Nathaniel Rateliff
Sturgill Simpson - Decent band, but I'm really not getting the hype. Many of the earlier acts were better.
Alabama Shakes - they could have picked up speed a little more, but they still put on a great show

All in all, this was a great weekend. The weather could have been better, but I can't expect the festival to have any control over that. I'm impressed that we didn't get basically any delays.

Exactly. I had thought about going, but had some work to do around the house. We finished up and when I was cooking dinner a monsoon started. Glad I saved the money.

I don't know. They did a great job on their songs, but the show was just not what I expected. I guess I expected more interaction with the crowd. Just felt like they were going through the motions.

They had a bunch of effects on the screens, and I guess that was supposed to cover for their lack of stage presence.

It definitely doesn't seem like something he will be doing.
