quote:Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but - with certainty - Newman, as narrator, is speaking in the voice of an ignorant redneck who just assumes any northerner on TV is a Jew. And, again - while he is ALSO taking down the yankees, the Jew remark is NOT intended as sympathetic to the redneck (although it IS intended to make the shocking turn at the end to the skewering of the yankees MORE concussive).
Now, the song is in character (and my evidence of this is that Newman is of Jewish ancestry and wrongly believed Cavett was Jewish)

Yes
Greatest American songwriter of all time.
Helluva band behind him also.
The Heartbreakers may have been the last real/meaningful Rock & Roll band we'll ever see.

I don't agree with this.
(ETA: Ironically, Lester Maddox was apparently most offended by Newman's perceived rudeness to a Jewish person and the entire inspiration for the song was Dick Cavett's apparent rudeness to Lester Maddox.)

I think you mean The Byrds. The Birds were an English rock band that ultimately gave us Ronnie Wood.

Do you agree that, in "Birmingham", he intends the song to be narrated from a position of unironic ignorance? Like, the singer is not even registering the very recent ugliness of Bull Connor et al?

I just don't know if it is that deep. I mean, maybe, but there is nothing in there to suggest this from an artistic intent. Newman wasn't an activist, per se. He was an adopted son of the South. If I had to pick, he probably leaned Skynyrd versus Neil Young in that scrap. I think he just saw how folks in his circle (Left Coast and NE liberals involved in the music bidness) talked and thought about Southerners and, however vain, sought to offer some sort of human voice. That's what I hear from these songs. I don't think he was pro segregation or anything like that, but he wasn't against the ordinary Southerner trying to get through all that during that very tumultuous time.

I love TP music, but I do get a chuckle out of towns that celebrate ‘native sons’ who have essentially disowned their ‘home towns’ I associate TP with California, not Florida at all.
I’m Duluth, MN they claim Bob Dylan with great pride. They even have local festivals celebrating him. How many times have you heard Bob Dylan discuss his happy memories of growing up in Minnesota? He GTFO as soon as he could and never returned.
That’s all ok. It just seems small for these places to latch on to someone who has no real connection to their city other than a birth certificate.

Yea, I agree. He really lost touch with his roots once he moved to California full time.
He actually became an unhinged limousine liberal.
I saw him at a function in California and Nancy Pelosi was actually sitting at his table with him.
He turned into a real a-hole.

There it is. Surprised it took until page 3.

Yes. As opposed to the salt-of-the-earth conservatism Trumps, Romneys, and Bushes.
