Roger Hawkins, the drummer in the legendary Swampers and Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section who played on hits like Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally,” and Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman,” has died at the age of 75.

“[Producer] Jerry Wexler called Roger, ‘the greatest drummer of all time.’ Roger was a kind and generous man who loved family, friends and his fellow musicians… We will think of you as we listen to your many hits including, ‘Respect Yourself,’ ‘Mustang Sally,’ ‘When a Man Loves A Woman,’ ‘Chain of Fools,’ ‘I’ll Take You There’ and so many more.”

Note: Loan Me a Dime too

Here he is playing with Tony Joe White:

Theres a great documentary on Prime called Muscle Shoals that goes into the history of music coming out of there and features the Swampers.

Played on about 2 dozen Top 40 songs over the years, including the top hits you mentioned, and things like Paul Simon's Kodachrome, Bob Seger's Mainstreet and Old Time Rock & Roll. (ETA: And the number of classic rock/R&B/soul tracks are easily into 100 and rivals that of West Coast session giants such as Hal Blaine and Jeff Porcaro.)

(Mostly, but not always with David Hood who is also likely the best bass player that folks outside the South has never heard of.)

yeah, but how many more famous bassists are featured in 25-foot-tall aluminum statues?
