Recommendations for sound system?

I'm looking to upgrade my speaker system from what I currently have (which is essentially nothing) for my record player/tv. So I'm thinking I need a receiver I can connect both to and switch between and then speakers to go with it. I'm not looking for anything ultra-pricey probably in the $300-500 range for it all together. Any recommendations for any specific setups or brands to take a look at? Thanks!

A used Adcom gfp555 has a good phono stage for the price. Look on ebay. You will need an amp to go with it obviously. The gfa535 and 545 can be found very cheap but you could stretch the budget and get the 555.
