I like "some" funk but I don't believe it really came about until the late 60's with Sly. I think bands like Ohio Players, Slave, Lakeside, Cameo, Barkays (70's), Parliament, Mother's Finest would be funk bands.

I know that many folks think that later James Brown was funk, but for me it was always soul music, performed too cleanly not to be.
