July 3, 1956: Elvis Presley chats with fans in the middle of Penn Station as he waits to catch the Memphis-bound train. He had been in New York to appear on the Steve Allen Show, where he sang "Hound Dog" to an actual Bassett Hound.

A 1964 top 40 radio playlist
It's certainly far more musically diverse -- British Invasion, soul, Motown, Brill Building, country, MOR pop, show tunes, even bossa nova -- than our own "diversity" worshipping era.
Note there are no Beatles records. The Fab Four were so dominating at this point that many stations gave them their own chart.

Beatles were at #14. I was 9 at the time and my local station,1240, probably followed the same playlist.

Very weird -- frankly, unbelievable -- they would only have one entry here. And that entry not even on Capitol.
One of my favorite charts (yes, I have favorite charts) is from a Dallas station in April of '64. It lists Beatles records separately. I remember b/c one of my favorite nuggets, "Dance Franny Dance" by The Floyd Dakil Combo (which never made any national charts) is at #21.
