But as cloying and stylistically dubious as "We Built This City" is, there's actually a very well-crafted melody at the core of it and I've always thought that if you took that basic aspect and gave it different lyrics, different instruments, and no goofy arse video, it has the makings of a song that would maybe come and go without much notice as opposed to sticking in peoples' minds as being the "worst ever". It's really the video and the DJ voice-over that do the most damage to that song.

For me, it was just the disappointment with a band that had created songs like White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. I couldn't understand when it came out how a group could get that shitty over the course of just seven years or so. I will always curse the mid Eighties because of the fact that the synthesizer came along and just caused so many great bands to frick up their sound with that shite. Van Halen's "Jump" absolutely disgusted me. I wanted the band that made Unchained back. So many of those great Seventies bands just started mailing it in about that time, in my opinion largely due to the music video craze and synthesizers.

May be my most disappointing song to that time by a group I really liked. Never saw them the same after that.
