Has anyone ever played one of these? Supposedly very heavy but it came recommended from a producer friend. I haven't had the chance to play one, but I found one for 500ish. Any one have any experience with it?

Rock solid workhorse bass. Emphasis on rock solid, hence the weight - I've never held any T-series Peavey guitar (and they made plenty of them) that wasn't on the heavy side. Make sure the one you're targeting has not been modified - part of the versatility and the now retro cool magic is the original pickups and an intact and unmolested original circuit.

you can get pretty much any tone out of that bass. Jazz/Pbass and even kind of a ric tone. The best thing about them is that they can be set as single coil or humbuckers with a turn of the tone knobs and can imitate almost any classic bass sound desired. They can go from a huge round tone to a biting trebly tone. They can imitate a Ric and a Music man with some twist of the knobs.

it's heavy and hell though. I bought one for $50 back in 1998. I remember everyone hating them!

what color is it for $500? the natural finish ones are the most common.

I wouldn't pay over $400 for one of those. the black finish ones are worth a bit more sense they are so rare.

here's a price guide what people are paying for them

I'm paying 500 for it, shipping included, which isn't a bad price. Some of the nice ones are going for 700 and 800, which is higher than what they were going for 10 years ago. I should have jumped on this earlier.

I have a Ric but it really isn't a great slapping instrument. I'm still looking for the right bass for that. Right now the Ric is set up to cut through with some really nice clean highs, and when I play with a pick at the bridge the attack sounds amazing. The one thing I don't like about it is the shorter scale. I love big basses. I nearly pulled the trigger on a White Falcon a year ago, and I think I will like how heavy this bass is.

Eventually I will get another 5 or 6 string too. Looking at single cut basses for that purchase.

no, ric's aren't great for slap at all. warwick's are. same for jazz basses. I don't remember my t-40 being great for slap though.

The T-40 isn't for slapping. I'll use it for tone snapping certain sections where I need them. The Ric does wonders for that growly tone, but I can't seem to mix it right so the growl doesn't dominate. I need something I can make smoother.

I'm getting to one with the maple finish and black pickguard.

Peaveys were pretty popular back in the late 70s, early 80's. Guitars and basses.
