The local high school band where I live found out this week that a trusted booster member had stolen 100% of their operating funds, approximately $75,000. This has left the band with no money to cover $10,000 in outstanding bills, to travel for competitions or to go towards a planned trip to Disney World. The Lumberton Mighty Raider Band members had not only worked extremely hard raising the funds to cover their operating expenses, the band has also continued to improve in competitions to the point to where they are now routinely being moved up to band classes to compete with schools that are three and four times their size. It has only been a few years since our band was finally able to purchase a trailer with the school logo painted on the side to haul equipment to band competitions. We don't have funding for the costumes and props. Contrast that with the schools they compete with, whose equipment typically arrives in 18 wheelers bearing their name, using top dollar equipment, and elaborate props for the competitions. In spite of our size and available funds, Lumberton has routinely placed 1st or 2nd when competing due to their hard work and dedication.

I don't know what the rules are in regards to posting a link to a gofundme site on this message board, but figured that people who appreciate music such as yourselves might want to donate to a fund set up to recover what was taken from these kids. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Is there a news story about the theft? How did this happen and what is being done to the person?

News Story

No arrest has been made, but apparently it was the Treasurer. As soon as bank records are obtained there will be an arrest. I don't know who the individual is, but usually booster members are parents. If so, I couldn't imagine what their kid would be going through.

As a lesson learned, no one individual should be allowed to with draw money. There should also be pretty frequent reviews of expenditure records. Doesn't matter if it is a school organization, charity, church, etc.

Stories like this are why public schools have such strict & inconvenient guidelines these days.

Checks must be made out exactly specific, payments take up to 14 days for approval of a Principal & school book keeper, & there are limitations on approved vendors (local or national).
