Better Than Ezra

I saw them plenty in the late 80s/early 90s...

But people really get excited when they come to town these days? Their music has by and large been garbage for the past 25-30 years...

I'm picking on them mainly due to the fact I grew up going to see them in college... But the same can apply for so many mediocre 90s alt bands that had their 15 minutes in that decade... blows my mind!

Was in Nashville in May and saw Jefferson Starship and Marshall Tucker at The Ryman. Starship played all of their hits poorly. A couple of songs, Miracles most notably, took a couple of verses to figure it out. They should call it a day. Same with Marshall Tucker. We left after 3 songs.

Being from Oklahoma, it seems like some of these Red Dirt acts are still going 25 years later and their best songs are from long ago. Like Jason Boland the stragglers

Sum 41

This one does not belong on your list for several reasons:
1. They're on their farewell tour.

2. They've never put out a bad album yet each album is stylistically distinct showing constant growth and innovation, yet never managed to alienate their core fanbase. Their final album encapsulates and summarizes every era of their career. Pretty interesting artistic stuff, far from washed up.

3. They had a lot more than just one or two hits from one album, but are even getting tons of radio play on their new songs 20 years into their career.

4. They still put on an incredible live show. Their set in the Parish Room at the House of Blues in 2019 is still one of my favorite live shows I've ever seen.

This is pretty close to the truth, in that particular circumstance.

They burned a ton of bridges and lost their differentiator (i.e., original singer) because he and his addictions became impossible to work with. He’s back in the game now solo, but it’s too little too late.

The original members can financially float, but the replacement guys are effectively hired guns who are not shareholders of the band and not entitled to royalties. So, they all have to grind out a living doing what I call the “casino circuit” playing much smaller venues and taking home less than your average corporate job.

Hinder has done some financially intelligent things like owning their own tour bus and keeping overhead low, writing for TV/movies etc. but yeah…it’s a good reminder that the whole rich and famous rockstar thing is unfortunately a caricature for marketing purposes.
