Anyone do this? I understand its basically an open jam/picking session.

I want to give it a try on the hope I learn a bit about playing bluegrass. TIA

Can't help you with the HiHo jam, but I've been taking lessons with True Fire for the last couple of months or so and my bluegrass playing has come a very long way. I've played guitar my entire life and never really had legitimate lessons. I've also always wanted to learn how to actually play bluegrass well. I came across True Fire a few months ago. Did some reading about it and got a free trial, then signed up. There are literally thousands of lessons on there and some really good bluegrass instructors. Worth checking out.

I have a lot of early to mid 2000s memories there.

Bumped for update. I went last night, first time. Really a good experience. I'll be back. About 15 people, with a few filtering in and out. 50% were 40+ year old guys, rest were hipsters.

Guitars, banjos, fiddles, upright bass. couple of the older guys "lead" it, threw out songs and what key, then went to playing. Easy to pick up as 90% were in key of G. Folks would pick up and play leads on the various instruments, ended with "the bottle let me down".

Very friendly, happy group, no attitude, people willing to help with the chord progressions. Some amazing musicians and voices.

Highly recommend it.

I went for the first time on January 6 - my son was on Christmas break and we mostly went to see a guy he worked with at Philmont Scout Ranch in NM last summer (banjo player). I agree on the musicians and singing. One lady on fiddle dropped in for a few songs while on a break from a gig across the street. It was a cool way to spend a couple hours on a Monday night.

Plus there's $2 High Life.

As an aside, Philmont gets some geat musicians on staff considering music is only a small part of their job. They've started recording albums by staff members - Philsongs III: The Sala being the latest.
