Listening to hip-hop of the 80s, 90s and most of the 00s made me realize the stark contrast in mood and style of nearly all of the mainstream music out today.

Big beats, designed to get people dancing, bouncing, etc., are almost nowhere to be found. Listen to anything from Pac and Biggie, to southern Hip-Hop from the early-mid 00s. There is nothing like that at all on radio or the charts today. Everything is very slow, same beat, and low mood.

Not everything out now is bad, don't get me wrong. But there's not a lot of "hip-hop" or "rap" going on in today's mainstream urban music. I just wonder what instigated the shift.

The shift case when it became much easier to produce beats. The formula for pop or radio hits has been discovered & exploited so now it’s just much easier to gain popularity by producing something catchy and riding its coattails.

There’s a time and a place for all of it imo.
