Just weird how he uses his thumb. I don't know anything about playing but, it just looked strange.

Yeah, I can't say I've seen that before. A lot of people use open tunings, especially with a slide. Derek Trucks and Duane Allman both tune to open E. But you usually don't see people playing that way. I've seen Grace Potter play a guitar tuned to an open chord like that but she uses her index finger all the way across the fretboard. She doesn't really play guitar and tuning that way at least lets her play I, IV and V, which is all she needed in that song.
