From what I understand, it is still a dive.

Looked at their website and they have events regularly. I may have to go checkout the "new" place soon

Great advice so far. Personally, I listen to various Motown artists for influence (best harmony/melody mix, imo). Usually, something will come to me, and I'll either sit down with the acoustic or piano and start arranging.
