Love this album and it's quirky history. Top notch songwriting. Love the production of it.

Raphael's very interesting vocal recording process:
Love the distorted vocals in this recording. It gave them a signature sound IMO.

The group deliberately left out the grammatically correct question mark from the album title because aesthetically, "it did not look right"

The September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City postponed the group's CMJ Music Marathon performance, and shifted RCA's US release of Is This It from September 25 to October 9. The Strokes chose to replace the song "New York City Cops" on the CD version of the album with a newly recorded song, "When It Started", after they witnessed the "valiant response" of the city's police department during the tragedy. The vinyl release retained the original track list, as a result of its release falling on September 11.

After the September 11 attacks, the American compact disc release was delayed from September 25 to October 9 and had its track list amended, with the song "New York City Cops" being removed and replaced with the newly written track "When It Started"; however, the American vinyl release still includes the track as a result of its release falling on September 11. Three singles were released from the album: "Hard to Explain", "Last Nite", and "Someday".

The Strokes' 2003 biography mentions the fear of objections from America's conservative retail industry and right-wing lobby as reasons for the artwork's alteration

When it Started is a better song than NYCC in my opinion.
Casablancas actually preferred the second album artwork and that is one of the reasons it was chosen.

I had no idea there was a different album cover.
Love this album.

it's still so good. the bass lines in it are catchy and creative. the vocals having a ton of gain/distortion give it a really cool feel. the strokes changed rock and roll like nirvana changed rock music.

I always thought the vocals were so odd. never could quite put into words what I thought they sounded like. Best attempt so far was that the singer called someone on the phone and they put that phone up to a mic.

they are odd but it works really well. gordon raphael explains how he recorded and produced it in that video.

I love this album. They had a unique sound. I really liked the sound of his lazy raspy vocals.
A lot of great bands came from this time IMO.
Like the Yeahs Yeahs Yeahs and LCD Soundsystem.
I Love Karen O’s voice.
This is an entertaining Doc of the early 2000’s music scene.

There was an interview with Gordon Raphael in EQ mag a few years ago - according to him Julian mostly sang through an AT 4033A into a solid state Peavey amp, which was mic'ed up with a U47. I can't seem to find the article online anywhere, but here's an excerpt from a SoundOnSound interview with Gordon from 2002 (there seem to be some discrepancies in the information - in EQ mag Gordon said it was a U47 on the amp, SoundOnSound said it was a TLM103):
"One of the most distinctive features of Is This It is the sound of Julian Casablancas' vocals, which are curiously distorted and compressed from beginning to end. "There were two techniques," explains Gordon. "One consisted of an Audio-Technica 4033A mic going through the Avalon 737, and I would usually work with Julian for an hour just to get the voice tone. Until the final result was achieved he would be extremely suspicious and unhappy, and invariably the final result would have some kind of messiness or not-quite-rightness about it, at which point he would smile and say, 'This is great.' So, that was one technique, and then the second technique was something that Julian had discovered on his own at home while making the demos. He liked to sing through his Peavey practice amp, which is about eight inches tall, and I'd mike that with a Neumann TLM103, so he'd still be singing into the Audio-Technica (Julian found the Neumann distasteful!), but I'd be Neumanning it in order to get the exact details of what this horrible little amp sounded like. "

Casablancas however possessed a desire to change the artwork to an image of a subatomic particle tracks in a bubble chamber – telling the band’s manager, “I found something even cooler than the arse picture.” The cover for the US version was eventually changed to the new image, also in part to several stockists refusing to sell the album due to the nudity on the original image.

This was a highly anticipated record after The Modern Age EP came out earlier in the year...
I was able to get the original cover art w/NYCC, because I ordered it through Rough Trade UK prior to 9/11.. it was released in August in the UK... Obviously I didn't know at the time that 9/11 would alter the track listing..
