And, I concede that many bands will record their own sweetening "backing track"
none of the improvisational bands do that. The closest some come to that is midi or prerecorded instrumental sound effects that are played thru an instrument (keys, drums, guitars usually). And even then all they are doing is achieving a different tone or effect with an instrument, still played live though

If people will sit through those electronic music "concerts" and pretend that the people on stage are generating live music, then I guess the "bands" feel like they can get away with it.
Check out this Daft Punk "show" as an example. Really, are they doing anything else but being disc jockeys who have access to big speakers? But, the audience responds like they're watching Led Zeppelin. I wouldn't walk across the street to watch it.

You have rock metal bands who have no keyboardists recording songs with a lot of keyboard sounds. In order to replicate the record live, they either have to enlist a tour keyboard player or play along to a backing track.
If you hear a keyboard sound but see no keyboard player on stage, at least part of that show is not all live.
If artists can get away with that, then they can also get away with sneaking in more pre-recorded or auto-tuned sounds.
And, if audiences still roar with approval like they do for the Daft Punk ilk, I don't think it will stop.
