Thought I’d revive this thread rather than start a new.

Looking for a 5-20 watt combo tube amp. Would like 1x10 or 1x12 to keep smaller footprint. Replacing a Vox AC15- don’t get any tones out of it that inspire me, and the one time I tried to play with drums and another guitar it couldn’t keep up (which is the reason I would like to have something as powerful as 20W on hand)

The tone I am looking for is natural OD from the tubes. Not a big pedal guy, but do like OD and would like it to kick in before cranking gain/vol to max. Would like pedals in the future, so FX loop a plus but not a must. I like to play souther/classic rock and other guitar forward music, though I’m finding myself interested in learning other genres as I get older. I guess I like versatility in my gear but overall I need this piece to give me that great tube sound and I will take it from there.

While I know they can get good tones, I’m a little scared off that fenders just won’t get the level of gain I’m looking for without blowing out windows. But feel free to change my mind, I play fender guitars so I can be persuaded.

Last thing is I’d like to be able to step down wattage if possible, as full wattage would get somewhat rare use. This isn’t a dealbreaker though as I have lower volume options.

Looking at:

Suhr Hombre - brown face clone. Really like the tone of this one. Bare bones, not extremely versatile but I know I would love to have this one day.

Marshall SV20C - only concern here is reviews make it sound like it is super loud even at 5W

Orange Rocker 15 - has plenty of step down options, only concern here is that the orange tone might be a little to dark/metal for my liking. This one checks a lot of boxes but the stupid part of me is looking the other way since I am considering some more higher end options and this is cheaper. I’ve also got a micro terror so may be a bit redundant

Mesa/boogie Cali Tweed - friend of mine has this and raves about it. Very versatile and steps down in wattage. However getting on the higher end of price range which opens door to other boutiques.

Looking a some other boutiques like Dr Z, Milkman, Magnatone - read great things about these just not sure about getting into those prices.

Any help would be appreciated, at this point open to anything, need to narrow down options.

The Orange Rocker is a great amp especially for the price. It's more of a classic rock amp, though it can get into classic metal territory without a boost. Pretty versatile amp. The OR15 is a similar amp but only one channel and has more gain on tap, still has a classic feel with the gain up.

Thanks for the feedback. I see on the first page you play a Friedman…I had looked at the runt as well looks to be similar to the JJ Jr.

I’m assuming you like it?

I loved the Friedman. I wheel and deal a lot and sold it and bought a helix. I'll probably buy another one some day. I'm pretty sure the difference between the runt and JJ is that the JJ has the JBE option on the dirt channel. more gain and more saturated. I would highly recommend the JJ. I'm sure the runt is great too, just never played one. You can't go wrong with any Friedman.

I have the spark amp and I love it. I normally gravitate towards it over my axe Fx 3 or Hiwatt. Now it doesn't sound better than those two, but its got a great clean sound and a pretty good distorted sound, plus all the extra bells and whistles that come with the app. This thing is way nicer than the fender mustang and I think it's going for around 200 bucks. Can't recommend this thing enough to someone just starting.
