I have a 1966 Gibson 335 block inlays on the neck with the trapeze tail piece and a 1980 Gibson 335 Pro with the "dirty finger" pickups and both scream, if you're patient on Ebay you can get a Gibson 335 under $2500, still a lot of money but much cheaper than new.
