Getting high and playing ...

... is gosh darn fun. Practicing in particular. I don't get high when I play out on account of I'm not that good and getting high makes me sloppy in front of people.
But for practicing, you can't beat getting mellow before you pick up your instrument. Right now I'm in the second hour of what will probably be a three-hour practice session, going over songs I've written. Dope gives me the stamina, focus and energy to go over and over songs, an otherwise tedious (to me at least) exercise.
Keith Richards was a big advocate of getting high when practicing, recording and mixing, for the reasons I stated. Of course, he was a big advocate of getting high, period. Just the same ....

Are you talking about shooting up? Yeah, I can imagine that'd be fun if that's your thing.
If you are talking about like smoking a j or something, then yeah, fricking right.

Norco, tramadol and benzedrine for me tonight. I shite you not I scored some dexedrine in California a few weeks back, and the three in combination make for a swell night of practice. The trick is to maintain discipline with the dexedrine; I'm not a kid anymore, so I can't take the quantities we all wolfed down in our college days. I suppose I could drink coffee instead, but those 5 mgs of dexedrine ... well, frick coffee.
Now, back to playing.
Now, back to playing.

Just say Goddamn.
I'm two months clean from Benzos. For starters I would take 7 blue footballs, have about 4 cups of coffee, preferably a sativa dominant medical grade hybrid ounce of bud and stay up all night recording and editing. I play guitar, drums bass and piano.
I enjoy writing blackened death metal with a sludge inspiration and hint of industrial. The weed wasn't an issue but I got kinda bad off with the pills, could go through 60 in a few days and alienate a lot of people in the process. don't let things get out of hand or it can cost you.

Benzos are trouble and tough as hell to kick. Congratulations on getting off of them. Have you had to deal with panic attacks and such coming off of them?

Uh yeah, watch out with that stuff.

No way.

Ok, maybe.
How would you even remember what you practiced? Tolerance or not, approaching 5 is instant blackout.

No so much in panic attacks, dealt with the insomnia and mood swings though. I've had issues with those for a while now, but I'm really trying this time.

I converted a bedroom in my house into a studio, I'd come up with a riff and record it. No shite sometimes I'd probably have 30 takes of the same riff or more. I'd pick the best one, put it as a track and record the same riff again with a different distortion. About 3 or 4 layered guitar tracks to give a full heavy sound. Record the bass, and this is all after I'd record the drums. I'd do the drums first and was always for the most part sober with those, unless it wasn't blast beats and heavy double bass.
It kept me focused to where I'd spend hours working, enjoying what I was doing. My hands, fingers and arms wouldn't get tired. Just hit me right. I'd wake up the next evening and listen to what I'd made sometimes not remembering I'd did all of that.

I have a very low tolerance for Xanax and taking just a couple of blues (a bar) is enough to put me right to sleep, but I knew a couple people in college who could eat 5 or 6 bars in one night and barely seem to have an effect on them. You probably won't believe me, but I had a buddy who ate 9 bars before a football game and sat through the whole thing. It was unbelievable how much he could take. It would literally have killed me

Yeah, I must be out of the loop, what are blue footballs ?

1mg pill of Xanax. Looks like a blue football. Can be halved into .5 mg doses (which is what the average person takes when prescribed). There are also "bars" (which are long and scored into 4 pieces), and they are 2 mg. Pills which can be broken into 4x .5 mg doses.
The average person takes a .5 mg dose of Xanax to deal with anxiety. The person above was eating 7mg of Xanax. So well over 10x the normal dose. The person referring to people eating 5-6 bars, is talking about doses of 10-12 mgs, which is just nutty levels. He's right, though, that Xanax effects different people very differently. I have friends who get all hyped up on the stuff. It works for me like it's supposed to: chills me out and puts me to sleep. Which means it's not something to "party" on for me. Other people differ, though.

That's the point Keith Richards makes in his autobiography, "Life." His thing was coke and H, speedballs, but he says he was able to spend hours, days, weeks at a time in the studio, practicing, mixing, reworking songs. It wasn't the creative stuff, but the nuts and bolts, the repetitive stuff that bores me when I'm sober.
Now writing, that's another thing. I don't–I can't–write when I'm high. It just doesn't work. So I write and put the music together sober. But when it comes time to practicing the stuff, especially new songs, dope, as I said, gives me:
• Stamina
• Focus
• Energy
I know a lot of people would shake their heads, thinking, "It's sad the dude has to do drugs at all. He's got a problem." But I'm past all that: to me dope in music isn't a problem, but a process, or part of the process. I don't advocate other people using, but I do champion my right to alter my mind as I see fit, especially in the creation of music and other forms of self-expression.
But enough of this bullshite ... back to playing.

I prefer "getting high and listening"

I can't do it. It turns my hands and arms into extremities that I only have about 50% control over. Does nothing for my focus. Now, a vyvanse or addy or two to a long way for me.

You talking weed here? I stick pretty much to mild opiates like Norco and tramadol, with maybe some Soma thrown in for prolonged playing. I got some dexedrine from California recently, so I've popped a coupla those over the last two days, but I'm giving my 62-year-old heart a rest today, drinking coffee instead.
Day Three into this current run however I'm feeling fine. Practicing, working up some new songs, getting ready to record on Saturday. The dope sorta has me on autopilot at the moment, which is a good place to be for practicing and going over the new stuff.

You all must be full-time musicians and not part-time professionals to be doing all of those drugs.

Me, I'm a part-time musician. And full-time dope fiend.
I'm in the middle of a four-day music marathon: practice, work up some new songs, do some recording on Saturday, band practice on Sunday.
