I got a chance to catch Sharde Thomas and the Rising Star Fife and Drum band this weekend in Nashville. It was awesome to see and hear music that I had previously only seen through a screen. This begs the question...what else have I been missing.

So, what other genre of non-traditional music should I check out? I would love some suggestions for something else out there that I should give a listen to.

Check out some of the work the North Mississippi All-Stars have done with fife and drum bands, including the late Othar Turner and Rising Star Fife and Drum band...they did a Bonaroo show together with RL Burnside, it was a scorcher.

You might like to listen to some Mardi Gras Indian bands as well...very tradition based music.

The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band (with Sharde Thomasa) is who I saw this weekend. I was at The Ode to Otha festival. Sharde Thomas is Othar Turner's granddaughter (and has surpassed him in her skill on the reed fife). Every year, they have a festival to honor her grandfather's music in Nashville.
