I especially liked the broadcast of California
Jam. I remember watching it with several friends.
We were like a real life version of an episode from That 70's Show, except we didn't hang out in a basement.

One night in 1973 were tuned in as usual and The Mahavishnu Orchestra came on the tube. Being a bunch of small town kids we had no idea what jazz fusion was, we were just awe struck, and sat there bugeyed with our mouths hanging open.

This was the actual segment.

Back when seeing your favorite musicians on TV was a big deal.

In Concert was the heavier, purer stuff.

Midnight Special was in-between.

American Bandstand and Soul Train were pop / Top 40.

Other than the occasional appearance by a music act on Johnny Carson or a variety show like Sonny & Cher, the above were the only options to see your bands on TV.

Back then it was important to read your TV Guide from front to back. You might find out that David Bowie was going to appear on Mike Douglas or David Gates was going to be on The Hardy Boys.

Pretty interesting stuff in the Wiki page linked in the initial post relative to how Don Kirshner was connected to these shows.

Jimi Hendrix was on Johnny Carson once, I don't remember the song, but his amp died in the middle of his guitar solo, they just let him plug into another amp and start over.

The Smothers Brothers always had some of the heavier rock acts like Steppen Wolf.

And the epic occasion when Keith Moon overloaded his drum kit with explosives and blew out Pete Townshend's hearing. I think a roadie or stage hand was actually wounded by cymbal fragments.

I have the Midnight Special dvd set, good stuff

I thought about getting that, but felt they just pick & choose certain songs, whereas I would want all songs from a particular artist from a given time period. They did expose a lot of artists, I remember seeing Slade, Wizzard, PFM, King Crimson, Roxy Music, even the Incredible String Band! Also of note, some extended versions- I remember The Ohio Players doing a 10-15 min. version of 'I Want To Be Free'.
