To the piano players of the board:

My first grader has been asking about piano lessons for a year now, so we'd like to let him give it a try this summer to see if he sticks to it or not. Before investing in a traditional piano, I'd like to start with a digital piano with weighted hammer action keys and I'm looking for any recommendations from the board (especially in the used market) with a budget of $500. I'm familiar with Roland and Yamaha, but what other brands should I keep an eye out for and what features should I look for?

Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm kind of jealous. I've been trying like hell to talk my first grader into piano lessons. It's such a fundamental building block to musical composition. She loves to sing, but just shows no interest in piano.

Hard to go wrong with them. Yamaha might be the bland choice, but they definitely spend the money to get this sort of thing "right" at your price point. I would say get the basic YPG or DGX (or whatever) model right at your $500 or $600 price point.

I would get this one right here:

Yamaha YPG-535

Impossible to go wrong at this price - this is an older model they're moving out, but fits the bill and your budget perfectly.

Set aside the price for a moment, you know that uprights are heavy as hell and grands? Forget about moving that yourself - plus tuning, maintenance, etc. At this level, the child quits after 6 months to a year - you firesale it for $250 to $300 - no fuss no muss.

A real piano? That's like adopting a child.

Yeah, the "investment" I mentioned was more than financial. My wife also reminded me of what piano practice would be like vs. a volume control or the silence of headphones.
