Did B-Real’s nasally high-pitched voice prevent Cypress Hill from becoming mainstream?

For a group that sold over 4 million copies of their hit album "Black Sunday" they never quite got the air play they deserved from both Top 40 and Hip Hop radio stations.

No. It's a niche sound that had a niche audience.

Nah they some how blended in with the Alternative Rock crowd. Most us who listened to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, NIN, and etc. Listened to them. House of Pain was another rap act that did the same thing.

I can't blame Cypress Hill's lack of mainstream success on the high, nasally register of B-Real's voice when the Smashing Pumpkins were moving units and appearing all over MTV at roughly the same time. Billy Corgan's voice is just as grating as B-Real's, but the Pumpkins blew-up huge.

Rock superstar wasn’t even played on top 40 radio stations. How is that considered mainstream?

because it was all over MTV, was in the US billboard top 20..as was insane, which made it to #1 on the us billboard rap charts, and that's not even mentioning How I Could Just Kill a Man, which also made it to #1 on US bilboard rap.

I liked the guys voice, let you know who it was from without even knowing the song.

Real seems to be doing ok for himself..
