Per Jim Stafford, this original version was so controversial at the time (1963) the songwriter could not find a music publisher for it

This. It seems to me Chris Stapleton just set the lyrics of this song to the tune of "I'd Rather Go Blind." It was actually a great C&W song when DAC did it.
