I love the sound of steel drums. It evokes a set of emotions that don't see much air time otherwise. The allure of the laid-back Caribbean way of life is real.

This group, Ebony Steelband, is not only pleasing to the ear, but the level of precision and execution is quite incredible. In this piece, they play for over 10 minutes straight. How they all can deliver the final product in the way they do is hard to comprehend. They go in and out of so many different chords, keys, rhythms, and syncopations throughout the entire piece. How so many players can pull it all together for that length of time with that much precision is hard to comprehend.

Robert Greenidge, Jimmy Buffett's steel drum player, is pretty awesome solo. I've seen him a couple of times.

My sister is a percussionist and plays them really well. It’s such an oddball instrument that she’s worked steady for years, because who the hell plays pans?

I’ve posted this before, but she recently tracked on a Mike Portnoy Rush tribute with players from all over the country.

I remember seeing the St. Croix Steel Philharmonic at the Bayou in the early 80’s. The sound was amazing with only percussion and no amplification.i’ve also been fortunate to catch Panorama in Trinidad.
