Bucc's review of Young Money - Rise of an Empire

Last YM compilation album surprised me and was able to showcase the talent YMCMB was able to comprise around its label head Lil Wayne. Since then Drake and Nicki Minaj have brought new superstar draw to the label and kept them relevant.
So here we go:
1. We Alright - Euro, Birdman, and Lil Wayne, produced by S-X
Pretty average intro track, sounds eerily similar to Carter 4's intro. Euro needs a lot of work on his delivery especially early on this track as he raps off beat. Best verse on this one goes to Birdman.
2. Trophies - Drake, produced by hit-boy and Noah Shebib
I actually like this beat and the change-up at the end (could've worked earlier into the song as well). I can't tell who is on this track rapping Drake does the hook, its an ok track beat outshines the rapping.
3. Bang - Lil Twist, Euro, and Cory Gunz, produced by Sonny Digital
This track is a lot better job by Euro and Lil Twist and Gunz also do a great job (wanted to hear more Twist I like him). I like this track one of the standouts for me. I like the style they use on the beat with the artists it's a good song
4. Senile - Tyga, Nicki Minaj, and Lil Wayne, produced by David D.A. Doman
I like this beat as well and again its another case (like the last track) where I could've done without Minaj saying something stupid about dudes being her sons? And heard more Tyga on this raw style beat, but it seems like he gets cut off to allow her rumbling
and I only say that because she doesn't fit on this song. Wayne's verse is ok he loses the beat a little bit. This one would've been better with Tyga and Wayne without Nicki but its ok.
5. Induction Speech - Euro, produced by Omega
This sort of smoother slow beat is what Euro works better for Euro. The production and storytelling on this track makes it the strongest song album. What is sad is because he's not a head liner it won't get much pub but it is a really well done song and Omega does a good job on the beat and it all fits.
6. One Time - Lil Twist, Tyga, and YG, produced by The Runners
What a damn waste of a good beat and Twist and Tyga on this slower beat talking about "pimping" and women is just horrible. YG fits but he doesn't do enough to save it. Just terrible
7. Lookin arse - Nicki Minaj, produced by Detail
The controversial first single (more for Nicki's stupid decision to use Malcolm X's famous picture, when the ONLY other Hip Hop artist to use just the likeness not even the pic itself like she did, was the Teacher KRS One and sorry Nicki but you don't even come close to those lyrical chops or legendary status, STOP IT PLEEEAAASE) and video of a song I think made more for a skit maybe or transition track on her album (I say that because of the shorter length). But Birdman and Wayne aren't stupid and if anything they are marketing geniuses and they know a marketable track when they hear one and this one is just that thanks to Detail. This beat Detail crafted is masterful and truth be told NM could be rapping about microwaves and toaster streusels and it would be a great track because of this masterful beat. Case in point her lyrics on this are pretty bad but its controversial, add that damn cover and voila a discussion piece for WEEKS before the album released, people who didn't even like NM or YM watched the vid on YT, what a masterful marketing ploy. The track overall by itself is ok, would've liked another 2 min of that beat with someone else (don't care what other label mate) added on there spitting over it, but it just ends abruptly.
So here we go:

8. Fresher than Ever - Gudda Gudda, Jae Millz, Flow, Mack Maine, Birdman, produced by The Olympicks
Throw away beat pretty basic, seems like a track used to show that Gudda is still signed to YM. Millz can be pretty nasty on the right beat and flow, he leaves a little to be desired on this. Flow is fairly new he's got his own certain style and fits on this, same with Mack both aren't very lyrical though. Throw away track for me.
9. Back It Up - Lil Twist and Tyga, produced by Lex Luger
Twist is his best again on this but the beat needs work. Surprised some of these well known producers have such basic beats and there's no telling how much they made for a beat on this album, its disappointing. Tyga rips it pretty good. I would've liked to hear another verse from Tyga or 1 more from each seems to end to abruptly but an OK track.
10. Moment - Lil Wayne, produced by Lee on the Beats
This seems like a bit of a reminiscing track for Wayne with the punchline of bragging every now and then (what you get with Wayne now though even on the most serious tracks). Even his singing on the hook works for me on this song. A standout track on this album for me. The track production is pretty good one of the best on here and I can't believe I'm saying this but this is the type of the track that seems to work for Drake and he is missing on this.
11. You Already Know - PJ Morton, Jae Millz, Gudda Gudda, and Mack Maine, produced by PJ Morton
The current Maroon 5 keyboardist and background vocalist PJ Morton shines bright on this track and this is the type of the tracks I WANNA see on this type of album please. We know you've signed this and that guy that have the chops so bring in some out of the box production ideas like this track. Easily the best compilation track to showcase YM's talent on this album, and easily the best production and 2nd best beat (behind Detail's Lookin arse). Lyrically was pretty good for these guys as well on the track. A great ending to the album and it shows what COULD'VE been accomplished on this album.
Deluxe Edition Bonus Tracks:
12. Catch Me at the Light - Shannell and Yo Gotti, produced by DJ Speedy (I know him as Gangsta Nerd but he goes by Speedy as well)
This track should've made the album no doubt. Speedy crafts amazing R&B beats and is one of the best out right now and doesn't disappoint with this one. Gotti does a great job also riding the smooth beat. It could've easily been a hit with radio play with one of your young R&B artists yet it only gets added as a bonus track. I like Shannell, she has a nice voice and some range. A nice track
13. Video Model - Christina Millian and Lil Wayne, produced by Big A Music
This one has a club feel to it. Pretty sure it will probably be a single for Millian. Nice club dance beat for an R&B song, hook is overused a little bit, silence is your friend sometimes to let a listener hear the beat. What the hell Wayne he doesn't shine on this track lyrically.
14. Good Day - Tyga, Meek Mill, and Lil Wayne, produced by DNYC3
An ok beat, another one that seems either too simple or unfinished. Wayne's hook is terrible but surprisingly wasn't the worst verse that goes to Meek Mill who doesn't fit on this track AT ALL he flows at a certain speed and it doesn't match and he's raw for this bubble gum type beat (I know what the hook is, don't care), can see why it didn't make the album sort of throw away.
Overall Grade: D+
Close to failing all around. Several throw away tracks and songs artists don't fit on just to show off this or that new artist. Only 2 good to great tracks with Induction Speech and You Already Know, and when one of the best beats was a totally outside of the genre musician that showed up and schooled the rest of the producers YM likely payed a pretty penny for and crafted one of the standout beats on the album...not good. Then you make a magnificent beat by Detail into a mockery track like "Lookin arse" and a controversial fiasco to sell your album and in the end even make it a shorter track...why? Because Nicki couldn't think of any more rhymes about the idiot subject matter? What a waste of Detail's time. I feel bad for a few of these guys that aren't half bad like Euro on the right beat and Twist who is way out of place and needs to be with another label who will exentuate his raw machine gun spitting style like Tech's Strange Music. This album did no one except maybe Minaj (again due to the controversy) on YM any favors and your highest grossing label artist only sings on 1 hook (Drake) and is noticeably absent from this. This album minus those 2 songs mentioned above and the Gotti DE bonus track is just all around BAD.

I know people are going to make the same stupid jokes but I'm glad you raised the point that Drake only had 1 song and it was the best song...has Drake ever made a bad song? Jeez.
The only positive thing is Euro he is sort of exciting although seems to try and copy drakes flow/presence on "We Alright".
Apart from that this compilation sort of sucked....wayne, drake, nicki and birdman (eh) are the only ones in Young Money with any talent(nicki has fans)...
It's time for Drake and Nicki to go solo...no idea why they let young money make money off them. I get that they discovered them but they already made bank off of 3 drake albums. Enough is enough young money should be disbanded.

You should do one of these song by song analysis for the Carter V, although these wayne verses don't get me excited for that album...
