While started with a guitarist (Davy O'List), The Nice became even bigger after O'List was let go by the band. The Nice of course, featured a younger Keith Emerson.

Rush, they wrote creative and provocative lyrics and had mad musical chops to match that was only equaled by Cream.

All three of the instrumentalists in those groups are universally considered among the greatest ever for their instruments in a rock context. Thus the similar chops.

Not to mention that Clapton, Bruce and Baker were massive influences on Lifeson, Lee and Peart in their formative years. Rush was essentially modeled after Cream upon formation.

point taken. When I think of comparable chops, however, the question becomes, can each band competently play each other's music. Rush could probably cover "Sunshine of your Love" effortlessly plus many other Cream tunes. Could Cream play have played "La Villa Strangiato", "Spirit of Radio" etc. - to me, no.

Likely due to Clapton's style, if Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix or John McLaughlin were in Cream no doubt they could effortlessly cover those Rush tunes. Shouldn't diminish Clapton's skill when he was arguably the greatest guitarist on Earth at the time, just amazing how well and consistent he played.

In the end that point's moot because it was completely obvious the musicians in Cream had the proper training to cover any song they heard and put their immaculate spin on it. It's hard to believe that an impeccably faithful cover does a best 3 man band make.

Let's not exclude the tracks on their superbly sublime Satanic Majesties Request, one of their most underrated and underappreciated albums in their existence and a fantastic listening experience to boot.
