Eleven years old at the time. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan came three months after the assassination of JFK. It was a huge story, especially for young Americans, many of whom were devastated by the violent murder of a youthful, energetic president they admired. Fortunately, my teacher that year encouraged us kids to follow and discuss these events, which made them far more prominent to us than perhaps they were perhaps for the typical kid of that time. In any event, the JFK assassination and the Beatles' Sullivan appearance were milestones of my youth.

As I wrote in a previous post, I and the guys I hung out with hated the Beatles, on account of our little girlfriends loved 'em. So we backed another up-and-coming band called The Rolling Stones.

And they were met by hoards of screaming teenage girls. Record producers saw this and determined that they needed to begin targeting teenage girls by making simplistic, crappy pop music. The Beatles destroyed music.

I watched all those Sullivan shows on CBS on Sunday nights. It's what we did back then. The buzz for the Beatles appearences was much louder than any other act. I got my first copy of Meet The Beatles a month before, thanks to my teenage aunts, and wore that sucker out. I knew I wanted to be a guitarist/singer in a rock band after seeing the lads 2/9/64, and we will start our show 2/14/14 with Love Me Do as an homage to one of the greatest months in the history of music.
